Project Adventure began in 1971 as an innovative ninth-grade physical education program at Hamilton-Wenham Regional High School in Massachusetts. Inspired by the ethos of Outward Bound, it was developed to be accessible to students from all socioeconomic backgrounds, scalable to various time frames, and designed to be taught in any outdoor environment.
The course is based on the belief that people learn best when they are having fun, are challenged, and are safe. The safety of the participants is a top priority for Project Adventure teachers, who receive extensive training and stay current on the latest advances in the field of adventure education.
One of the goals of the course is to increase teamwork by allowing students to work together to overcome an obstacle that they cannot do on their own. For example, when the group encounters a 10-foot-tall wall, they may need to devise a way to get everyone across, such as building a bridge or rappelling from a tree.
Another goal of the Project Adventure curriculum is to increase self-esteem by allowing students to challenge themselves and discover their limits. For instance, when a student attempts to climb a log that is over his head or scale a 10-foot-tall wall, he or she may struggle at first, but then overcome the obstacle with pride and satisfaction.
In addition to these goals, students also learn how to use tools for survival in a harsh environment. They will learn how to find water and food in the wilderness, and they will practice tracking their energy levels and balancing sleep quality and nutrition.
